The sunlight poured through the windows. I blinked the sleep from my eyes, wishing I’d closed the drapes before I’d gotten into the huge, soft, cloud of a bed. I’d been so blown away by Jake having gone to sleep in his own room, that I’d been in a stupor when I went to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
There, on the counter, I’d found a beautiful, pale-blue box tied with a white, satin ribbon. The card attached had my name on it, yet nothing else. Clearly, it was from Jake, but I had no idea why he’d left it on the vanity. I’d untied the ribbon, lifted the lid, and then carefully unfolded the gold tissue paper. Inside was the most elegant, sensual, sexy, and expensive nightgown I’d ever seen much less touched. The silk was unlike anything I’d ever felt, and the white was more pristine than snow. With intricate lace that lined the hems and tiny straps, it was nearly weightless, and holy hell, when I slipped it over my head and onto my bare skin, I nearly orgasmed standing there.
I fought traipsing down the hall in my new nightie to thank Jake, thinking it was all the wine the two of us had shared. I’d gotten really good at lying to myself about my feelings for the man. But now, in the light of the morning, that same silk tickled my skin, and I was sober as a nun. I’d fought my urge for Jake for weeks, and last night, he’d been the perfect gentleman. This morning, I wasn’t feeling quite so restrained, and I prayed like hell that he was still in his room. There was no way I’d go roaming through his house in search of him in this slip of a gown.
I eased out of bed, hating to leave the comfort behind and went to the bathroom. I brushed my teeth—nobody wanted morning breath involved in seduction—and then combed my hair. Again, I admired the nightie in the mirror, turning this way and that to see the plunging back. I licked my lips and pinched my cheeks for a bit of color and headed to the bedroom door. I opened it quietly and stuck out my head, looking both ways for oncoming traffic. Once I’d determined it was safe and I wasn’t in danger of being seen by any of Jake’s staff—not that I’d seen anyone here other than Gwen—I stepped out of my room with all the confidence in the world.
That was—until I reached his door. And then I stood there like an idiot. It wasn’t closed completely, but I felt weird trying to peek through the crack to see if Jake was inside. Finally, I took a deep breath, straightened my spine, and pulled back my shoulders. He hadn’t brought me here this weekend to reject me. In fact, the idea that he hadn’t wanted to sleep with me last night plagued me until sleep finally took me under…and I realized he was giving me space.
